Part 1: Philological approaches
Part 2: Structuralism
Part 3: Text and discourse analysis
Part 4: Cognitive approaches
The relationship between linguistics and literary studies has undergone great changes in
the last centuries. While both used to be unified under the heading of philology up to and
during the nineteenth century, they have parted ways in the twentieth century and deve-
loped into separate disciplines (with linguistics focussing mainly on the form and literary
studies on the interpretation of texts) that are not sufficiently aware of their interdepen-
dence, at the cost of losing synergies. Recently, however, there have been inklings of a re-
newed interest in methodologies and results of the respective other discipline.
In the course of the four workshops, we intend to trace this development. We have roughly
divided it into four major stages according to the most prominent theories that advanced
the interaction of linguistics and literary studies. The goal of this enterprise is not so much
to chart the history of these disciplines, but to understand the underlying conceptuali-
sations and tacit assumptions concerning theoretical and methodological concepts foun-
dational for either discipline. By examining for each of the individual theories how they
define these key concepts and terms, such as meaning, text, evidence, representation, and
interpretation, we will highlight the differences as well as the common ground between
the theories. We will pursue this strategy by complementing our readings of theoretical
texts with model interpretations of literary texts. In this way, we expect to showcase the
potential mutual benefits of an interaction between the linguistics and literary studies.
