Russia and the West: Contact and Conflict
This working group will explore Russia’s relationship with the West (with an emphasis on
Germany and the United States). It will focus on culture, politics and diplomacy, working back
from the present to the past and forward from the past to the present. It will examine three
historical periods: the Cold War; the post-Cold War era, from 1991 to 2014; and the period of
crisis that began in 2014.
It will look closely at the political dynamics of the Russian-Western relationship, at the sour-
ces of geopolitical conflict and at the various ways that have been found to moderate and
at times resolve this conflict. No less will it bring in the complicated matter of culture, on the
premise that Russia and the West are culturally intertwined, without being culturally identical.
Examples and issues from the present will be incorporated into this working group.
