Having operated through a system of recommendation exclusively for many years, the Studienstiftung additionally established an admission process on the basis of application in 2010. The first step of this application is a test. Every student in her or his first year of studies may register for the test each year in January/February.

In the admission process of PhD (or doctoral) candidates and in certain joint programmes by the Studienstiftung and partners, the first step of admission is based on the written applications. In all other programmes, the most successful participants of the test and all nominees will be directly invited to an admissions seminar.
