Requirements

The Studienstiftung promotes German students at universities, universities of applied science, German state colleges of art and music. Even German students who spend their entire period of study at a university abroad are eligible to receive a scholarship.
Students from EU Member States are eligible to become scholars provided that they spend most of their time studying in Germany and complete their studies in Germany. Other foreign students may receive support if they have attained the necessary qualifications for admission to German higher education and have had a permanent residence permit in Germany for several years. At the time of application, students must be under 35.

Doctoral students are eligible for a fellowship if they have been accepted as doctoral candidates by a German university or research institute. The time between obtention of the qualifying academic degree and the application for funding must not exceed five years. Doctoral candidates must be under 38. If doctoral candidates have other financial support (e.g. employment, a doctoral fellowship from a research centre or graduate school), they are not eligible for support from the Studienstiftung.
