Since 1980, the examination boards at all German universities have the right to nominate excellent students to be promoted by the Studienstiftung. To this end, the Studienstiftung writes to the heads of the examination boards every year and asks them to nominate students who have caught their attention through outstanding academic achievements in their undergraduate studies.
The candidates are invited to take part in a selection seminar where they can demonstrate their academic and extracurricular qualities to the members of an independent commission. Every candidate takes part in group discussions, gives a short lecture and attends two individual interviews, one with a member of the commission from a related field of studies.
Every year, about 2,000 students take part in this selection process. Altogether, roughly 50 selection seminars take place all over Germany. [ Details in German ]
