Globalisation and internationalisation have a growing impact on politics and the economy, and they have increased Germany's international responsibility. This development causes a demand for qualified young German executives. Here, the Mercator Kolleg für internationale Aufgaben (Mercator Kolleg for International Affairs), a project of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation) and the Stiftung Mercator (Mercator Foundation), wants to intervene.
The Mercator Kolleg supports highly qualified postgraduates from all academic disciplines who seek employment in international organisations. During the 13-month programme the participants work in two to three international organisations whereby their self-designed projects focus on foreign and security policy, economic policy, and technical, scientific and development-related cooperation. Alongside these internships, the programme offers seminars on international policy issues as well as on the development of leadership skills. With the Mercator Kolleg, the Studienstiftung and the Stiftung Mercator continue and further develop the "Stiftungskolleg für internationale Aufgaben" which was established in 1995 by the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Robert Bosch Foundation) and, since 2001, run under the auspices of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Studienstiftung in cooperation with the Federal Foreign Office.
