Science Journalism and Foreign Correspondence Programme

There are many ways of entering journalism. To be sure of starting off on the right foot you should have gained practical experience beforehand allowing you to learn the necessary basic skills. This is particularly true for aspiring science journalists and foreign correspondents. Anyone interested in either of these two fields, who is planning to embark on training or further education, is eligible to apply for this scholarship programme.

Sponsorship is available for work placements or traineeships with foreign correspondents, for example, or in science editorial offices. Practical training at schools of journalism is also eligible for financial support. The programme is open to graduates of all subjects. Applicants must organise a journalistic project lasting at least nine months themselves. Several consecutive projects are also possible.

A commission of experienced journalists as well as a representative of the Besser Foundation decide upon admission to the programme. They determine the terms of the individual scholarship according to the project. The maximum for a year’s scholarship is 12,000 €.

The programme has been financed since 1994 by the Dr. Alexander and Rita Besser Foundation in the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. [ Details in German ]
