Daedalus

The head of Daedalus with its many hands and prominent conch-shaped ear has now become famous as the Studienstiftung's hall mark. It features on all publications and stationery, on the website and the Intranet.

The long-serving tutor, Hubertus von Pilgrim, Professor of Sculpture at Munich’s Academy of Art, designed a medal to honour people for their exceptional services to the Studienstiftung. The medal  the mythological figure of Daedalus. For Pilgrim, Daedalus not only represents a figure of genius, but symbolises initiative and responsibility for one’s actions: “The Daedalus Principle – as I see it, not only means inventing with ‘thinking fingers’, it is also ‘naturam novare’ and thus is extremely topical.”

For the Studienstiftung, the head of Daedalus stands for the successful combination of theory and practice, talent and creativity, but also for experiencing failure as a basis for renewed initiative and making use of one’s own achievements responsibly for the benefit of society.

So far, the Daedalus Medal has been granted six times. In 1995, the Studienstiftung recognised the exceptional services of its Honorary President, Dr. Johannes Zilkens, by awarding him the medal. The next occasion was 1999 when it went to Irmgard Ulderup, the Studienstiftung's largest private donor. In 2003, it was awarded to Professor Dr. Helmut Altner for his particular services as President of the Studienstiftung. In 2008, two notabilities were awarded the Daedalos Medal: Professor Dr. Rudolf Zahradník, former President of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, received the award for establishing considerable scientific contacts with Eastern Europe; Professor Dr. Berthold Beitz, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Alfred Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, was honoured for his commitment to sponsoring gifted young people. In 2011, Wolfgang Hosemann was awarded with de medal for his services as Treasurer of the "Verein Freunde und Ehemalige der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes".

From the design of the large medal, the Studienstiftung had a limited edition of silver coins minted in 2005. On the occasion of the Studienstiftung's First Donors’ Assembly, the 24 most generous private donors were awarded this Daedalus Coin.
