The Studienstiftung’s alumni: these are former scholars – currently more than 50,000 people living all over the world. Their professional careers are just as diverse as their courses of study were broadly-based.
A significant number of former scholars have chosen a career in academia. Almost 9,000 alumni work as lecturers or professors at German universities, some 2,000 of whom are women. A further 2,100 are academics (550 of whom are women) at universities abroad, from Switzerland, via the USA, to Japan and New Zealand. Many of them cooperate with the Studienstiftung, volunteering to work as lecturers, tutors or members of selection commissions. Direct access to research is of particular importance to the Studienstiftung as it benefits the scholars directly through various events.
Many alumni hold important positions in business or public service. They support the Studienstiftung as lecturers at the annual management academy, advertise internship placements or vacancies on the job exchange on the Intranet and provide insights into the application situation for young professionals in the “Business Contact Seminars” (Career Fairs). It is no coincidence that some of the joint fellowship programmes with business partners were initiated by former Studienstiftung alumni.
The more than 4,000 alumni now permanently living abroad often remember only too well the language barriers they faced at the beginning, their initial difficulties in finding a suitable work placement, or position, or simply somewhere to live. Thus, they are glad to help scholars taking their first steps abroad. The Studienstiftung facilitates contact by inviting alumni from the respective area to meetings abroad with active scholars. Furthermore, in 2005, young researchers from abroad were invited to an “Alumni Academy” in Berlin for the first time.
